Sue Elizabeth Miller (nee McGill) passed away at home on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at age 75, after battling ovarian cancer. Her legacy as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, teacher, and advocate will be fondly remembered. She was known as an industrious, disciplined, and devoted person who prioritized her family and friends above all else.
She was born to D.T. and Sarah McGill on February 1, 1949, in Plainview, Nebraska. She graduated from Creighton High School in 1967. She then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where she earned her degree in Education and met the love of her life, James W. Miller. They married in 1970 in Creighton, Nebraska, with Al Montgomery as best man and sister Kay Stafford as maid of honor. Sue and Jim recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
In 1978, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska, along with Kevin and Paige Wycoff, where Jim and Kevin joined a medical practice. Jim and Sue spent the majority of their years together in Hastings. Sue was actively involved in the Hastings community, volunteering at her children's schools and serving as an elected school board member. She was an active tennis player, golfer, and member of several social clubs, including PEO and Book Club. She was an avid reader and enjoyed learning and keeping up with local and national issues. She loved caring for her family and home and was an exceptional cook. Friends were always delighted to be invited to a meal at her home or to share in her delicious pies and breads.
She was the founder and volunteer coach for the Adams Central High School tennis program for 6 years. In 1999, she took a job teaching cooking classes in the family and consumer science department at Hastings High School, where she taught until her retirement in 2019. She and Jim enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to scuba dive with their children across the world. Later in life, they traveled extensively through Europe with their friends Dave and Marje Little.
In 2021, Sue and Jim moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to be closer to their family. She was a devoted mother to two children, Mathew (Jennifer Griffin) Miller of Omaha and Paige (Jim) Miller Esch of Omaha. She treasured her four grandchildren: Katherine Miller, Luke Miller, Alexander Esch, and Maxwell Esch. She is survivedm by her cherished husband, James Miller, and three sisters, Kay (Dick) Stafford, Pat (Don) Richardson, and Jane (Mike) Schroeder.
