Charles H. "Chuck" Evans Obituary (1935

Dr. Charles H. "Chuck" Evans passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at his home. Memorial service 11:00AM, Saturday, July 22, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, NE with Rev. Greg Allen-Picket officiating. In honoring his wish for Anatomical Gift to the University of Nebraska Medical Center there no viewing or visitation. Dr. Charles H. "Chuck" Evans was a long-time college teacher and professor of Political Science at Hastings College from 1966 to 1999. He was active as a leader in faculty governance having served as faculty president and president of the Faculty Senate, faculty advisor for Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship, and chair of the Political Science and Human Services Administration majors. He was active in community affairs as President of the Hastings United Way, a member of the Board of Deacons, the Session, and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees Board Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church, President of the Hastings Noon Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a long-time participant in Nebraska and local in aging organizations. In the 1970's he served as a member and Chairman of the Nebraska Commission on Aging, a member of the Advisory Council of the Nebraska Department of Social Services, member of Adams County Senior Services and President of the Board of Directors after 2000. A SHIIP Volunteer (Plan D) who advised seniors on Medicare Prescription Drug Insurance for ten years, Chairman of the Advisory Council and member of the Governing Board of Midland Area Agency on Aging. He was an Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 200 for nearly 20 years who taught winter camping skills, and citizenship merit badges. Evans graduated from Hastings High School in 1953, Hastings College in 1957, received a Master's Degree from the University of Oregon in 1960, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1971. He received post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and was President of the Nebraska Political Science Association. He was inducted into the Hastings College Pro Rege Society in 2006. His central philosophy was civic virtue depends upon civic participation and the civilization of the dialogue in democratic societies. The central questions are what public policies should be adopted, how should they be paid for-there is no such thing as a free lunch-and that government is both necessary and productive in a successful society. He was blessed by the gifts of a loving family, the support of good friends, and the sustaining power of a gracious God who expects as well as gives compassion. He enjoyed the out of doors, especially mountain climbing and backpacking, sunrises and sunsets, reading and playing bridge, and conversations about current events and public affairs. His parents, C. Vernon and Mildred L. Evans, preceded Chuck in death. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Georgie; daughter, Michelle Howard (Greg), Rapid City, SD; sons, Charles Michael Evans (Paula), Sarasota, FL and James David Evans and friend Susan Adams, Lakewood, CO; Grand children, Kelsey Schroeder (Greg) Rapid City, SD, Andrew Howard (Karen), Santa Clarita, CA, Charles Cameron Evans, Melbourne, FL, Nicole Gartley (Mike), Venice, FL, Allison Martinez (Brian) Jupiter, FL and Ashley and Madison Evans, Denver, CO; Great grandchildren, Kayden and Kensi Schroeder, Aidan Gartley and Riley Schuler-Martinez; Brother, David Vernon Evans, Arlington, VA; and sister-in-law, Jean Brown, Torrington, WY.
